I picked this book up at a book swap ~ the cover had a sticker on it that said "large print" and I have an elderly neighbor who likes to read but has a hard time indulging in the pastime anymore because the print sizes can be too small for her. I had no intentions of reading it myself, only to give it to her, but as I studied the cover I found myself interested. I've never read anything by Mary Stewart but I believe I remember my Mom reading & enjoying her books?
The author is very good at conjuring imagery with words ~ the old cottage, hidden doors, walled gardens, all things I'm instantaneously sucked in by. Add a little white magic and poof, she had me.
Sadly it was over almost as soon as it began. Too quick of a read to really count as a book (in my mind) ~ it seems more in the category of a novella? This edition says 404 pages but that's deceptive because of the large print ~ most other additions put the page count at near 200. The ending and "happily ever after" came suddenly and with a rushed feeling. I will say it was nice, light, easy reading and enjoyable. Hard to get upset over a book like that but also nothing substantial to get very excited about either. Now to give it away as was originally intended!
