on a soft summer night.
“In June as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them.”
Strolling thru the garden this last eve of June, it's easy to see what spurred Leopold to write those words.
Buds and new blooms abound.
Each one looking particularly fresh in the soft light of evening.
and even more so after a quenching rain shower.
Aaaah, pure refreshment!
This time of day, along with dawn, are my favorite to walk, view & photograph the garden.
Even tho there are new blooms throughout the gardening season, June always seems the most luxuriant month.
Above & below: Bullock's Orioles inspecting the lilies for insects.
Always a delightful combination.
(forgive the quality of the Oriole photos, I took them thru my bedroom window ~ blinds & all!)
When we flip the calendar to July in the morning,
the real heart of summer begins.
The pace will slow. No more "mad" leaps of growth.
A chance for both plants & gardeners to breathe and savor the luscious time of year.
But first a celebration.
Enjoy, as I know you will. As Leopold said, it's impossible to ignore.
Funny - I was just out looking at my Elodie Lilies a little while ago and thinking that they will be open tomorrow or Thursday! This makes me want them to hurry up....so gorgeous. I want to go back out again after seeing your photos, but I spotted a baby skunk under my Baptisia a short time ago and I do not want another encounter with a skunk this week, so I will wait until tomorrow. Love all your photos! Your Queen Red Lime is way ahead of mine which are only about 8" tall so far...thank you for the seeds. We will have to save them this year. Happy 4th of July to you both!

Sigh... It is a stunning time of year, isn't it? And you've captured your lovelies with the most graceful light. Happy 4th!

Love all that pink. June really is the best season for our garden also. With the heat we've been having though, it feels like August is already here.

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the lilies. They don't generally do very well here, but with the overabundance of rain this year, they look like they will have a banner year!

Kathleen your Elodie lilies are so beautiful this year. Mine is doing better than last year and have the double petals again. I just figured after them going to single petals last year that would be the end of the doubles. I was so glad they doubled again this year. Still yours are doing better than mine. They are such a gorgeous Lily. Hugs.
