Yesterday I broke out my big red box of seeds. I keep most of my unused & new seed packets in an old shoebox (nice, huh?) with the remaining assortment taking up a little corner in my refrigerator. I have seeds from 15 years ago in that box. Whoa, before all the garden enthusiasts panic, I DO realize they are probably no longer viable. Having said that, I still hang onto them, not because I'm a packrat but because I enjoy the sorting process and the memories of gardens past that inevitably arise. Just looking at the packets will bring all sorts of odd information to mind. Whether or not I had success germinating them, how well they blossomed in my garden, did they survive the winter, etc., etc. It will even remind me of other things happening in my life. Yesterday, however, I was not feeling nostalgic. I was searching for the peony poppy seeds I purchased in January. (papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum for the diehard plant people out there) The search came up empty. They are no where to be found. The search goes on.... In the meantime, as you can tell from the photo, my favorite place to buy seeds is Thompson & Morgan seed catalog.
My new catalog always arrives in December and unerringly sidetracks me from the holiday at hand. I spend hours perusing the catalog which culminates in very long "wish" lists about my upcoming order. Unfortunately, my available garden space is limited so I always have to cut my list in half then in half again. I think one of the reasons I am so fond of Thompson & Morgan is they used to give away a trip to the Chelsea Garden Show (back when I first started ordering, the early 90's). Your name was entered every time you ordered. The Chelsea Garden Show is also on my Life List. #10. So I had to order from them. I couldn't forfeit a chance at winning!! See the logic?!! Sadly, they no longer do this, or at least I don't see anything about it in the catalogs of late. Old habits die hard so I keep on ordering and dreaming. Now where are those poppy seeds????
