with plectranthus, that is and not my car, my containers. These hardy annuals (in my zone) have turned out to be one of my favorite "filler" plants, my only complaint is that they are so darn hard to find. With the exception of this common "Green & Silver" variety (I think you can buy it at any big box store these days):
I have to look high and low for any of the other (approximately) 44 species propagated. I guess nurseries don't get it in, thinking it won't be that popular since it doesn't have a brightly colored flower sitting atop the foliage?? That's all I can figure because otherwise I can't understand how it gets overlooked. This year I was lucky enough to find two I hadn't seen before. This 'Troy's Gold' (plectranthus ciliatus):
which is phenomenal. I think it would be more yellow than green if I had planted it in full sun ~ it gets mostly shade in the container it graces. There it intermingles with my blue and black salvia (which should be getting more sun too) and the contrast is particularly striking. Plectranthus are members of the mint family meaning they have four sided (square) stems and are easily propagated from cuttings. I am debating whether or not to take cuttings this fall of 'Troy's Gold' and my absolute favorite, 'Cerveza 'n Lime:'
Look at the thick, fleshy leaves of this fantastic plectranthus. I wish there was a "scratch 'n sniff" feature on typepad because the aroma is what truly makes me delirious about it. I want to just lay down and roll in it, the scent is so indescribably delicious. Now I know how a cat feels when he ambles across a clump of cat mint. I planted 'Cerveza 'n Lime' in one corner of my hanging basket:
see it peeking over the pelargonium on the upper right side of the basket?? Next year, I will definitely plant it in a position of more prominence as it didn't reach (anywhere near) it's full potential squished in the basket. I used to love coleus as fillers (and I still use a few) but if I had to choose between the two, I would definitely chose a plectranthus any day of the week. In fact, just because it makes me happy, I think I'll go rub on the 'Cerveza 'n Lime' right now!
